ABOUT OUR GROUP The Santa Ana Elk Lane Toastmasters provides the perfect environment for overcoming shyness, building confidence, and improving speaking skills. We meet every 2nd and 4th Thursday, from 12:00 Noon until 1:00 PM. Meeting at lunchtime allows many people, particularly working professionals, the opportunity to participate in Toastmasters without impacting their work routines or daily schedules. Lunch is available for purcahse. We are working class and professional people; native speakers of English and those for whom English is a second language. Some of us work full time and others are retired. Of course, we have both men and women. Many of our members are also members of the Benevolant and Protective Order of Elks, 794 In short, we look a lot like the world at large. What we have in common is a desire to be more effective in our communication and leadership skills. Toastmasters gives us a place to develop both, maintain our individuality and celebrate the diversity of our world. ![]()

WHAT HAPPENS AT OUR CLUB? Most of our opportunities to speak are unplanned and we have little chance to think about what we are going to say. In Table Topics we have an opportunity to practice impromptu speaking, quickly organizing our thoughts and expressing them in an effective manner. The Table Topics Master asks a series of questions, usually based around a common theme, and each participant gives a one to two minute response. Guests are encouraged to participate, but no one is required to answer a question For those occasions when you do have time to work on your presentation, Prepared Speeches is the gives you an opportunity to show off what you can do, learn new skills and gain confidence in your ability to speak before an audience. New members work through a self-paced manual of ten speech projects . Each project focuses on one element of effective public speaking, such as good organization, body language, use of props, etc. Now that you've spoken, so what? That's where the Evaluations portion of the meeting comes into play. Each prepared speaker receives both an oral and a written evaluation of their speech. This feedback tells us what we're doing well, gives us pointers on what we can improve on and how we can do it better, and reinforces the lessons learned in the speech project. The General Evaluator also provides feedback on how the meeting as a whole was conducted. This helps us learn more effective meeting and teamwork skills. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
